Tori Wrånes
(b. Kristiansand, Norway, 1978)
Tori Wrånes studied visual arts at Oslo National Academy of the Arts and experimental theatre at York St. John University. In 2017 she opened Hot Pocket, a solo exhibition, at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo, which generated a lot of attention before the museum closed its doors to become a part of the National Museum’s new building. Wrånes has had an active and international exhibition practice over the years. In 2025 she was the Festival Exhibition Artist at the Bergen International Festival (Festspillene i Bergen). In 2026 she will represent Norway at the Nordic Pavilion during the Venice Biennale, exhibiting alongside Klara Kristalova and Benjamin Orlow.
Traveler depicts two sportily clad human figures. The bottom figure has stuck its head into the ground in search of the underworld. Meanwhile, the upper figure balance on the outstretched leg of the first, stretching towards the sky with a backpack on its shoulders. Two birds replace the top figure’s face, their wings spread out as if about to take off.
Wrånes has achieved international acclaim for her dreamlike performances. She combines sound, musical instruments, costumes, and often an ensemble of troll-like characters, challenging the limits of her own and the performers’ vocal and physical expressions. The trolls, who represent repressed aspects of our own myriads of personalities, break the social and physical limitations of human daily life and live by an unrestrained and audacious way of expressing themselves. The freedom to be who you are, to explore, feel, travel, and move outside of presumed limits are fundamental aspects of Wrånes’ art.
Traveler was originally made for the exhibition Hot Pocket. Wrånes asked two of her friends to stand in the position she wanted and scanned them with a laser. A later version was cast in bronze for the Ekeberg Sculpture Park. The sculpture depicts a dramatic moment where the top figure will either take flight under the bird’s wingspan or fall headfirst towards the ground. Traveler derives from the same ideas and processes as Wrånes’ performance work. Hidden or mystical worlds outside of our own is a recurring theme, as well as the tension between opposites. The title Traveler indicates one person, but the work clearly depicts two people going in different directions. Or is it one and the same person?
